Tawhid

Al-Ikhlas 112,1-4

Say: 'He is Allah, One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor was He begotten. There is no one equal to Him.'

The above surah is one of most quoted passages in the entire Qur’an, and even Muslims who don’t pray regularly are familiar with its words in Arabic:

قُلْ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ ٱللَّهُ ٱلصَّمَد لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُۥ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌۢ

Qul huwal laahu ahad, Allah hus-samad, lam yalid wa lam yoolad, wa lam yakul-lahoo kufuwan ahad.

There is a lot of emotion that goes with these words, as they so often accompany the events of a Muslim’s life. For many, they bring back memories of home and the security of belonging. Sadly, a lot of tension and misunderstanding also surrounds the fundamental truth of the oneness of Allah. The words of surah Al-Ikhlas, which so beautifully unite Muslims together, are often seen as a barrier, dividing them and the People of the Book.

Even though the Qur’an clearly and repeatedly affirms the validity and truthfulness of the previous Books, there are still people who would not even touch these Scriptures, let alone read them. The question of tawhid, for many, is at the very heart of this fear. Are these fears, however common, truly founded?

The Scriptures were given by Allah, Al-Wahhab (the Giver of gifts), to be the light and the truth of the righteous (muttaqin), as the Qur’an clearly and repeatedly affirms. Why, then, should the People of the Book continue to be the only ones to enjoy the barakah which the words of Allah contain? Why should Muslims remain deprived of this Allah given blessing?

We want to put your heart at peace. Neither Isa Al-Masih, nor the book given to him by Allah (Injil), ever invited people to compromise on the basic principle of tawhid. Neither do we, Allah forbid! Quite the opposite is true. To begin with, let us quote two passages, which confirm the doctrine of tawhid.

Tawrat, Deuteronomy 6,4

Hear, O Israel: Allah is our Lord (Mawla), the Lord is one.

This pillar is affirmed again by Isa Al-Masih in the Injil.

Injil, Mark 12,29.30

Isa answered, "The first one is: 'Listen, Bani Israil, Allah is our Mawla. There is no god except him. And you shall love Allah your Mawla with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.'

Injil, Galatians 3,20

A mediator necessitates the presence of more than one side, but Allah is One (Wahid).

Can we stay firmly on the solid ground of the doctrine of Tawhid, and on the path of submission, and at the same time accept the validity and authority of the Tawrat, Zabur and Injil. Is that possible? Al Hamdulillah, the answer is a clear and sound: Yes!

Yunus 10:64

لَا تَبْدِيلَ لِكَلِمَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ

No change can there be in the Words of Allah, this is indeed the supreme success.
