Bismillahi ar-rahmani ar-rahim
Last time we read about the human conspiracy against Allah in Babylon. To remind yourself, I recommend you read again Tawrah, Genesis 11:1-9 (in our previous Weekly reading)
Instead of following the plan of Al-Waasi’ (the Boundless) who told Adam (as) and Hawa to multiply and fill the Earth, the descendants of Nuh (as) invented and carried out a plan of their own. Knowing about the flood which covered the whole Earth, they decided to build a tower so tall that it would “reach to the heavens” in order to out-smarten Allah and to “make a name to themselves”. The meaning of the word islam (اَلْإِسْلَامُ) is submission. The act of the Babylonians is its exact opposite.
There is an irony in the way Allah responded to their rebellion. The Tawrat says that “the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building.” (Tawrah, Genesis 11:5) Allah is Al-Baatin (Knower of the Hidden), but he “came down” so that he could see the great achievement of the proud Babylonians.
Allah could have destroyed the tower and its builders, but he did not do that. In fact, the lesson of the flood and the tower of Babel serves us as a reminder, that punishment does not fix the problem of human sin. The builders of the tower were all direct descendants of those few people who came out of Nuh’s ark after the flood. Yet, those rebels did not walk in the righteousness and humility of Nuh (as), but in the sinful ways of the antediluvian generation. So many people, Muslim and other, suffer as a result of the wrong idea, that cruel force can bring good. This creates tragedies in families and ruins nations, but it is a tragic error. Punishment has its place, but remember, even the punishment of Allah is not the solution to our World’s biggest problem. Allah has a far better way.
The ruins of Babylon outside of al-Hillah in Iraq still testify about the failure of human pride and plotting against the will of Allah. One deeply believing Muslim, who used to deny the validity of the Tawrah, was convinced about the preservation of the true word of Allah in it after reading the prophecy about the fall of Babylon. This learned man said: “Those great cities were always rebuilt after disasters and conquests, but not Babylon. You can go and see for yourself.”
The curse of Babylon, the confusion of languages, is still with us. All our attempts to fix it by the use of Persian, Arabic, Russian, English or Esperanto will not overcome it. The prophetic visions which Jibril delivered to nabi Daniyal (Daniel) also made it clear that all human attempts at uniting will fail, including the biggest unifying attempt by the Dajjāl. (see the 3 part article about Daniel, chapter 2 on our website.)
Allah divided people because of their pride, and only Allah can unite them again, as is witnessed by His messengers.
Nabi Zekarya 8:19-21
Therefore love truth and peace.” This is what the Lord Almighty says: “Many peoples and the inhabitants of many cities will yet come, and the inhabitants of one city will go to another and say, ‘Let us go at once to entreat the Lord and seek the Lord Almighty. I myself am going.’
Injil, Galatians 3:28
Among you there is no Yahudi or Greek, no slave or free, no man and no woman. You are all one in Al-Masih Isa.
Al-Hujurāt (49) 13
People, we created you from a male and female and made you peoples and tribes, so that you could know each other. The godliest among you toward Allah is the most honorable. Allah is all-knowing and aware.
What would happen to me, if Allah solved the problem of sin by destroying all the sinners right away?
Do I live in peace and unity? Really?
