Weekly Reading 20 Al Kutub: The Books of Allah’s Revelation

Bismillahi ar-rahmani ar-rahim

On our journey we are now reaching the oldest prophet whose book Allah preserved until our days. We don’t have anything written by Adam, Idris (Enoch), or Nuh, no Scripture by Hud or Salih. Not every prophet was given a book, and not every message that was spoken by Allah to His prophets was preserved for us. This might make some of us very curious about their messages, but the message, given by Allah to some prophets was for their time and place only, and there would be no benefit in writing these down and keeping them for future generations. Perhaps they may even confuse us, because they were words of Allah, but spoke to people and situations different from our own. On the other hand, Allah made sure provision for us to know whatever is profitable for us. The Qur’an speaks clearly against those who would deny any words spoken by Allah to people, or who would even teach other Muslims not to read them.

Yūnus 10:95

And never be of those who deny the signs of Allah and [thus] be among the losers.

There are prophet’s books, about which the Holy Qur’an explicitly says that they originate with Allah, were given by him to the prophets He chose, and are protected by Him. These are included in the Tawrat, the Zabur and the Injil. The protection, of these books, the Qur’an says, is Allah’s great victory.

āli ‘Imrān 3:3.4

It is He Who has sent down the Book to you with truth, confirming what came before it. And he sent down the Taurat and the Injeel before, as a guidance to mankind, and He sent down the criterion. Truly, those who disbelieve in the revelations (ayah’s) of Allah, for them there is a severe torment; and Allah is All-Mighty, All-Able of Retribution.

Yūnus 10:64

They have good news in this world and in the hereafter, and there is no substituting Allah’s words. That is the great victory.
